LE CERCLE – The researchers of the American firm would have developed a processor with calculation capacities never reached. For Jean-Phillippe Poisson, the American firm could have taken an important step in the quest for the “improved man”. Explanations

Google claims to have reached a milestone referred to as “quantum supremacy”, which was reported in the “Financial Times” on Friday. A study by Google researchers describing this innovation was briefly published on the Nasa website. The researchers claim that their processor is capable of carrying out an operation in three minutes and twenty seconds where it would take 10,000 years to the most advanced computer today. This is “an essential step towards large-scale quantum computing”, they write in the study according to the “Financial Times”.

This new technology, the object of a veritable gold rush and supported by strong public investment in the United States as well as in Europe, is based on quantum physics and can push back the limits of Moore’s Law and computers as we know them today. Totem of the exponential technologies dear to the Valley, it promises to change the world by an unequalled computing power with which any current cryptographic system will be obsolete.

Pushing the limits of death

The information deserves to be put into perspective according to the new transhumanist doctrine exploding in Silicon Valley. “What is about to be created will be a god. […] If there is something a billion times smarter than the smartest human, what else would you call it?” writes Anthony Levandowski, former Google and Uber engineer, autonomous car pioneer and creator of the transhumanist organization Way of the Future.

Transhumanism, the ultimate expression of technological solutionism, where no problem in the world can not be solved by technology, consists in improving Man until the ultimate goal: to make him perfect and push back the limits of death.

It is well known that Google has many links with transhumanism, from the hiring of Ray Kurzweil, the “pope” of the cultural and intellectual movement, to the sponsorship of its university, the Singularity University. The term “singularity” refers to the moment when the human mind will be surpassed by artificial intelligence, which is expected to grow exponentially from the year 2045.

Awareness in the cloud

This search for the singularity, based on computing power, has just passed a new milestone. In a future theorized by transhumanists where humans will be able to download their consciousness into the cloud and enjoy infinite intelligence thanks to machines, no doubt quantum computing will play a key role.

“Downloading a human brain means scanning all the essential details and then installing them on a sufficiently powerful computing system. This process would capture a person’s entire personality, memory, talents, history,” as Kurzweil writes.

The champions of transhumanism promise that in the next 20 years we will be able to overcome all pathologies and aging thanks to artificial intelligence. So, is quantum supremacy a first step towards eternal life as promised by Silicon Valley futurologists?
